Why is professional soccer played in football stadiums? Can’t they get their own stadiums?

It’s funny seeing the yard lines of the football field still there while soccer is being played there.

It must be so embarrassing for soccer players to not be able to get their own stadiums.

Soccer needs to learn its place. It’s way less important and popular than football.

And just where would the money come from? An average professional soccer game has maybe 1500s fan per game. Maybe if they charge $5000/ticket and $75/beer, they might be able to afford it. Personally, it’s a channel filler for when the “Leave It To Beaver” reruns start getting old.

Are you serious? Soccer is the most recognized sport in all of the WORLD. American Football is just popular over here, it’s just now getting known in other countries. And, they play on football fields because they’re exactly the same size. Have you ever thought that maybe football teams use soccer stadiums? Yeah, they do. So they’re no technically played in football stadiums, they have their own. Plus, you have to consider the surrounding areas. Maybe a local football team wants to have their Regional Finals at a big stadium for more customers, and the only close big stadium is a soccer stadium. Then you would have to paint the lines.

    Please, don’t be so close-minded.

Soccer stadiums are being built all the time as soccer is catching on here. The colorado rapids got one last year, the college i’m going to just finished theirs this summer. Soccer is more popular among kids in the US than football so maybe you need to learn your place… football is boring and teamwork is minimal at best. Soccer is a way better sport.

Too bad the US doesn’t have love for the sport like the rest of us in the world…………….*BTW it’s called football, not “soccer”.

are you one of those inbred americans? Football is by far more popular than american football, by far!

The majority of MLS teams now play in their own stadiums.

    Chicago Fire; Toyota Park
    Columbus; Crew Stadium
Los Angeles Galaxy; Home Depot Stadium
    Chivas USA; Home Depot Stadium
Red Bull Park opens next year
Colorado Rapids; Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
    Toronto; BMO Field

then why are you on a football forum ,if you think football is rubbish?.I have never understood why that rubbish you call football gets called football. Its played by a bunch of poofs, all protected with pads and helmets.Over here in the u k we play rugby A man’s game.We leave that rubbish you call football to the ladies.

  8. saagar g Says:

I live in Chicago and the Fire have a beautiful Field (bridgeview). It has 20,000 seats and it is filled about 14,000 plus every game..

I heard Colorodo got one. I think the Home Depot center is one to.

It is not embarrassing for the soccer players since they play in football stadiums but I think because it is not full.

Football stadiums have 50,000 + seating while American Soccer is not very popular and have about 15,000 attending each game unless Beckham or Blanco are in town!

Hopefully when soccer gets popular more people attending means more profit means new stadiums!

Football is way less important & popular than football? You sound confused. For the record, since you obviously are only referring to MLS teams, 8 of the 13 MLS teams have their own stadiums, another 1 is opening their own stadium next year, & 2 others play on facilities that they share but were designed with them in mind.

No, it’s not as big as American football in the US. But it’s still a great game & a whole lot of fun to attend a match.

It’s obvious you don’t know your data
    1) Where was the most important game in Football (American Football) played?
Yankee Stadium (59′ championship game, Colts vs. Giants) - Baseball Yankee Stadium!? Yes.
    2) Which stadiums have hosted the most Super Bowls ?
LA Coliseum (no NFL team there right now) and Orange Bowl (er..college stadium).
    3) Several NFL teams still share their stadium with other sports such as Baseball.
    4) Stadiums in other countries are also shared among sports, events, concerts, etc. That is the norm.
Please, broad up your horizon, open a book, read about the history of your own favorite sport. Please!

This only happens in the USA when the NFL Season is about to begin.

The MLS has progressed a lot over the last decade and many of these teams are now getting their own stadiums.

rockabilly philip paul above …has a good list of soccer oriented stadiums in the USA for the applicable MLS franchise.

That alone means the game is gaining popularity in the USA, not less important as you are commenting.

This is still a very young league……If I recall correctly….early on when the NFL and AFL were still around…the Giants and Jets franchises would play in the Polo Grounds…..stadium oriented for the sport of Polo. Baseball was also played here by the Yankees and the Mets until all of these teams eventually had their own stadiums…..

    Bill W~

Thank you for using a “question” to state what you wanted to, that Soccer is “way less important and popular than football (American football that is)”. This sort of question is what makes you look less like a football fan, and more like a dooooshbag.

Soccer in America is under no notion that is more “popular” or “important” than the other sports in the country. In fact, Soccer has been a good ally of other sports in this country.

On top of that, Soccer, specifically the MLS, is desired in many cities, and by many other professional sports groups.

For example, just this year it was announced that the Oakland Athletics purchased the rights to an MLS franchise.
Also this year, the New York Mets have put their name on the list, as a group that wants the rights to purchase an MLS franchise. In the next couple of days, the Seattle Seahawks ownership group will be announced as the next Owners of an MLS franchise. They will take their team, in 2009, to Qwest Field, where the Seahawks play, and will share time in the stadium.

It might also interest you to know, that Qwest Field was built with the intention of Soccer, and Football, and for that reason, the very first event at Qwest Field, was in fact, a Soccer Game.

Lastly, Soccer isn’t the only sport sharing time with other franchises. All across the country, football teams share stadiums with baseball teams. It’s a means of saving money for franchises, and cities, and partnering to offer more sports to cities, with less revenue, and room for new stadiums.

So, get your facts straight, act like an adult, or Keep your Mouth Shut.

By the way, I can’t imagine there could possibly be a more complete answer to your bull_hit question. So, I will appreciate it when my answer is picked as best.

    Thank you.

Wikipedia states that soccer is the most

COULD get their own place to play. [and all
this time I thought horseshoes was the most
